Coaches
HEAD COACH
Maria has been the Head Coach since 2017, coming off her retirement as a player with the Canadian National Women's Senior rugby team.
As a player, Maria was the 2012 Rugby Canada Player of the Year and a Silver Medalist at the 2014 Rugby World Cup. Off the field, Maria is currently the Rugby Canada Board Vice-Chair and has been on the Rugby Canada board since 2017.
As a coach, she is known for her technical expertise in all facets of the game, with a particular skill set for line outs, scrums and contact areas.
In 2021, Maria was named the Prairies University Men's Rugby Championship Coach of the Year by her peers following her teams run to the League Championship Final.
ASSISTANT COACH
Mozac has been an assistant coach with the club since 2012. He has also been the Head Coach of the U19 Men's Alberta Wolfpack Team since 2022. Mozac prides himself on team culture and empowering players to read and react to what's in from of them.
As a player, Mozac played for the Prairies Wolfpack from 2009 to 2018, winning a National Championship in 2015 and earning Player of the Tournament Honors that same year. He played for the National Senior Men's Team in 2016, and joined the Seattle Seawolves in 2018, winning the inaugural Major League Rugby Championship.
Off the field, Mozac was the Director of Rugby for the Calgary Saints from 2019 to 2021, guiding the club through the COVID pandemic, retaining club membership during a difficult time.
ASSISTANT COACH
Amanda Schmidt is joining the MRU Men’s Rugby Club as an assistant coach this year. Amanda has been playing rugby since 2010, and currently plays for the Calgary Hornets.
Amanda started her coaching journey as an assistant coach with the boys’ team at the high school where she is a teacher, helping the boys to win a city championship in 2019. She has since been the head coach of her high school girls’ team (2023 City Champions), as well as head coach of the U16 Girls Mavericks for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and assistant coach for U16 Girls Wolf Pack in the 2022 season.
Amanda also has extensive experience in management and organizational roles. She was VP Women for the Calgary Saracens from 2015 to 2017, growing the women’s program there to two teams as well as entering a team in the AWP division. She has also served on the CRU Board as the Director of Representative Rugby, heading up to the Calgary Mavericks rep program from 2018 until 2023. Most recently, she was selected as team manager for the U19 Men’s’ Wolf Pack team on their trip to the CRCs in Vancouver.
Amanda’s coaching background has also included coaching wrestling, lacrosse, basketball, soccer, and cheerleading. She is a passionate coach who believes in using sport as a vehicle to teach youth important lessons that will serve them the duration of their life.
ASSISTANT COACH
Zak Scovoranski is an assistant coach for the MRU Men’s Rugby Club, and has been since 2021.
Prior to joining the coaching staff, Zak was a student at MRU, and played with the club from 2017 to 2020, holding important on and off-field leadership roles. Zak served as club president for his final two years as a player with the club, and captained the MRU 7s team that travelled to LA 7s in the spring of 2020.
Zak is also an active member of the Calgary Saints Rugby Club, and has been since 2017. In his time with The Saints, Zak has coached junior teams, served as VP of Men’s Rugby, and played for the senior men’s team.
Zak brings a strong amount of energy to the practice and game atmosphere, and enjoys working one-on-one with players to help them hone in on small details of their game.
